In the wake of the UK general election, our abortion rights are in the spotlight.
It has recently been announced that women in Northern Ireland will have access to government-funded abortion care in England. Whilst this is a huge step forwards, NI women are still forced to travel because they cannot access safe, legal abortion care at home. Meanwhile, throughout the UK, women remain at risk of criminal prosecution for ending a pregnancy without the authorisation of two doctors, and anti-abortion protests outside clinics are on the rise.
We must ensure our abortion rights move forwards, not back.
2017 has been a year of progress. In March, MPs in the House of Commons voted overwhelmingly to decriminalise abortion across England and Wales, and a number of recently elected MPs have already committed to supporting abortion rights.
It is more important now than ever to build on our success. Our politicians and the public support choice. We must ensure that our elected MPs – whatever their political party – hear the voice of the UK’s pro-choice majority, and commit to defending and extending a woman’s right to choose.
This is My Pledge, Her Choice.
We are asking all elected MPs to commit to three key pledges to safeguard and extend women’s right to choose:
1. Protect clinic access and funding for all UK women
2. Oppose parliamentary attacks on abortion rights
3. Support further moves to decriminalise abortion, in line with the Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations) Bill 2017
It is up to us now to guarantee our rights as women, and for women, by holding our representatives to account.
